RICHMOND, Va. – Great scoring chances were at a premium Friday night.

So when Evelyn Javers had a great chance she more than buried it.

The Columbia University and four-time Maryland high school state champion at Bethesda Walt Whitman High School was tripped up just a stride inside the box after trying to split two defenders. She calmly stepped up and laced home her penalty kick goal in the 42nd minute.

Her McLean Soccer defense made it stand as visiting McLean picked up a 1-0 road win over UKFC in a Women’s Premier Soccer League Atlantic Conference-The District Division opener for both teams. The game was played at the Veritas Soccer Complex at the Veritas School in Richmond.

McLean (1-0-0) finished second in the District Division last year behind the Arlington Soccer Club. The side posted a 6-1-1 record for 19 points and finished with 19 points, three behind Arlington Soccer Club. McLean held a 30-12 scoring edge last season.

UKFC finished third in the same division with 12 points, going 4-4-0 on the pitch.

The WPSL listed the season opener of these two teams as its Game of the Week and the match more than lived up to it. McLean finished with a 12-9 overall shots edge, including 10-4 with shots on frame, and both teams having five cornerkicks in the match.

Charlotte Shapiro (first half) and Aislinn Wright (second half) combined to make four saves to gain the clean sheet for McLean (1-0-0, 1-0-0).

Erin Jones made nine saves in 10 chances for UKFC (0-1-0, 0-1-0).
