Messi Skips MLS All-Star Game Amid Heavy Schedule, MLS Eyes Possible Penalty

AUSTIN, Texas (July 23, 2025) — Lionel Messi was notably absent from the 2025 MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday night, despite being voted onto the roster by fans. This marks the second consecutive year Messi has skipped the event, with his absence again raising questions about the league's expectations of its star players.

Inter Miami’s head coach, Javier Mascherano, confirmed that Messi, along with teammate Jordi Alba, would not participate in the exhibition match due to a demanding schedule. Messi has played in nine matches over the past 35 days and has been involved in Inter Miami's efforts in the Club World Cup.

“The priority right now is ensuring Messi and Alba get the rest they need to perform at their best,” Mascherano explained.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber addressed Messi’s absence after the event, acknowledging the disappointment among fans but also emphasizing the league’s inability to announce the decision sooner. According to Garber, the league will decide on potential disciplinary action following the All-Star Game, with MLS rules indicating a one-game suspension for players who skip the event without a valid medical excuse.

Despite Messi’s absence, the MLS All-Stars defeated Liga MX’s All-Stars 3-1. The match featured standout performances from players like Denis Bouanga and Tai Baribo, highlighting the talent within the league.

Looking ahead, Messi is expected to return to the field for Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup match against Necaxa on August 2. A special "Player Spotlight Messi" broadcast will allow fans to track his every movement via a dedicated TikTok Live stream.

The absence of one of soccer's most celebrated players, however, has sparked discussion about the balancing act between player health, commercial obligations, and fan expectations, as Messi's impact on the league continues to grow.

Do you think Messi should have played in the MLS All-Star Game?
