USWNT records sixth shutout in last 10 games
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – Rose Lavelle scored in her first national team match of the year following ankle surgery and the United States defeated Ireland 4‑0 Thursday night in a friendly match.
The game was played at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in front of 18,504 fans – and it was a dominating effort by the Americans from start to finish.
Defender Avery Patterson, midfielder Sam Coffey and forward Alyssa Thompson also found the back of the net for the U.S.
Patterson, making her third career appearance, opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a header off a short cross from Lavelle – Patterson's first international goal for the USWNT. Lavalle corralled a short corner before sending the ball through the box to Patterson, who rose above traffic to send it home.
Coffey doubled the lead just before halftime with a well-placed shot across the box, marking her third career goal and second in the last three games.
After missing a few months due to the injury and surgery, Lavelle – later named the Woman of the Match – renewed her place on the scoresheet in the 53rd minute, capitalizing on a precise assist from Ally Sentnor.
Thompson sealed the decisive fourth goal in the 63rd minute. Thompson dribbled the ball some nearly 30 yards on the left side of the spine before ripping her shot from just outside the box.
The USWNT outshot Ireland 26-2 overall, including 8-0 with shots on goal and also added a 7-0 advantage off cornerkicks to add to their dominating effort.
U.S. coach Emma Hayes fielded a youthful lineup featuring several debutants. Goalkeeper Claudia Dickey (Seattle Reign) and defender Lilly Reale (NJ/NY Gotham) made their first international starts. Eighteen‑year‑old Jordyn Bugg appeared as a second‑half substitute. Six starters had fewer than 10 caps.
Lavelle, with 111 caps, and veteran defender Emily Sonnett provided leadership. Ireland rarely even threatened in the final third of the field and only had the two aforementioned shots in the game not on target.
The U.S. earned its third straight clean sheet with Dickey earning the shutout behind a stout defensive effort that essentially shut down the Irish attack for most of the 90-plus minutes.
Over its last 10 matches, the USWNT is 8-2-0 overall with six shutouts and a 24-6 scoring edge.
